Roberts is a small village along Interstate 94 in St. Croix County, and it appeals to buyers who want a Wisconsin address, a small-town setting and direct highway access. It is a community of fewer than 2,000 people that has grown steadily and sits on the outer edge of the Twin Cities metro. We want to be candid about what it offers and what it does not, so here is our guide to living in Roberts, WI.
The Setting
Roberts is a village of 1,919 residents at the 2020 census, up from 1,651 in 2010. It is surrounded by the Town of Warren, and Interstate 94, U.S. Highway 12 and Wisconsin Highway 65 all pass through it. The village dates to the railroad era and was named in 1873 for a railroad engineer.
Parks and Community
Amenities are modest and local. Village Park has a playground, baseball fields, a four-season park building and a rentable pavilion. The Roberts Lions Club hosts Good Neighbor Days in the park the weekend after Memorial Day, the village’s signature community event. We did not find a long list of restaurants or attractions we could verify, so we will not pretend otherwise: for a broader dining scene, expect to drive to a larger neighboring community. If you want a quiet small town with a ball field and a neighbor-run festival, Roberts delivers.
The Roberts Housing Market Right Now
Roberts is small enough that most market sites publish little. What we can verify:
- Median sale price (Redfin, all home types, September 2026): $349,833, down 9.9% from a year earlier
- Days on market, sale-to-list ratio and share selling above list: not published for Roberts by the sources we checked
In plain English, Roberts has the lowest median of the five Wisconsin communities in this series, but a 10% drop on a handful of monthly sales should be read cautiously, not as a trend line. With so few closings, a few higher or lower sales can swing the median. For any specific home, we pull recent comparable sales directly from the MLS rather than relying on a town-level headline.
Schools
Roberts is served by the St. Croix Central School District, which has about 1,866 students. St. Croix Central Elementary (PK-4) is in Roberts; the middle and high schools are in neighboring Hammond. GreatSchools rates the elementary school 6 out of 10, the middle school 9 and the high school 4, and describes the district overall as having more schools rated below average than above. SchoolDigger ranks the elementary school 286th of 1,039 Wisconsin elementary schools for 2025-26 and gives it four stars, with Grade 4 Forward Exam results above state averages. The high school rating is the one to look at closely, and we encourage families to visit before buying.
Taxes and Costs
This is where Roberts requires attention. Ownwell puts the median effective property tax rate at 1.78% and the median annual bill at $4,464, versus 1.40% for St. Croix County and a Wisconsin median of 1.43%, which is the highest rate among the St. Croix County communities we profiled. Savings on the purchase price can be partly offset on the tax bill. Wisconsin’s advantage is more likely to show up in state income tax, where the 2026 top rate is 7.65% versus 9.85% in Minnesota. Run your full budget with a tax professional.
The Commute
Roberts’ defining feature is I-94, which gives direct access toward the east metro and the Minnesota border. That makes it a realistic commuter location for east-metro jobs, though we suggest testing your own route at commute hour before you commit.
Is Roberts Right for You?
Roberts fits buyers who want small-town living with direct interstate access and a lower price point than Somerset, New Richmond or River Falls, and who are comfortable with limited local dining and shopping. It is a harder fit if you want a vibrant downtown, the shortest possible commute, or very low property taxes. We also suggest families look closely at the high school.
Let’s Talk About Your Move
If Roberts is on your list alongside Hudson, New Richmond or Somerset, we will build the comparison with real numbers.
